Imagine the scene: The last golden rays of the sun dip below the horizon, painting the South Devon sky in hues of rose and lavender. The gentle murmur of the waves provides a natural soundtrack as I, your civil celebrant, stand ready to guide you through a truly unforgettable evening.  For Sarah and Tom, their dream was an intimate elopement, just the two of them, on a secluded Devon beach as dusk settled. They wanted a ceremony that felt deeply connected to the wild beauty around us, and that honoured their commitment to each other and to the planet.
As a celebrant passionate about both love stories and environmental stewardship, the “Leave No Trace” principles are at the heart of any outdoor ceremony I create. For Sarah and Tom’s “Coastal Twilight Vows,” this wasn’t just a set of rules, but an integral part of their spiritual and emotional connection to the landscape.  Here’s how we wove them into their magical evening:

  • Prior Reconnaissance: Before the day, I visited our chosen spot – a hidden cove near Noss Mayo – to assess accessibility, tidal movements, and any potential wildlife. We confirmed it was safe, quiet, and suitable for an intimate ceremony without disturbing local flora or fauna.
  • We discussed a truly minimalist setup. No elaborate arches, no temporary structures. Just the raw beauty of the beach itself. This meant fewer items to transport and less potential for disruption.
  • For the fading light, we opted for a few small, battery-operated LED lanterns placed safely on the sand, rather than open flames. Their soft glow added to the ambiance without any fire risk or light pollution.
  • Tide Timing is Key: This was crucial for an evening ceremony. We meticulously checked the tide tables to ensure we had ample time before and after the ceremony for safe access and egress, giving us peace of mind and allowing us to fully immerse ourselves.
  • Accessing the cove involved a short, winding path. We made sure to stick strictly to the existing trail, avoiding trampling any delicate coastal vegetation.  Once on the beach, we kept our ceremony to the open sand below the high-tide line, where our presence would have minimal impact on sensitive dune systems or rockpool ecosystems.
  • The Sea Glass & Vow Exchange: This was where Sarah and Tom’s beautiful vision came to life. We had discussed the ethical sourcing of sea glass at length. Instead of bringing new glass, they had spent months prior to their elopement gently collecting pieces of naturally tumbled sea glass from other local beaches during their walks together.  During the ceremony, I guided them to hold their individual pieces of sea glass – each a testament to time, tides, and transformation. As they spoke their vows, they infused the glass with their intentions, their hopes, and their promises.
  • Unlike the suggestion of returning it to the sea (which might risk introducing non-native elements or creating a ‘treasure hunting’ mentality that encourages disturbance), Sarah and Tom chose to keep their sea glass. These beautiful, ocean-worn tokens now sit on their mantlepiece, a tangible, ethical, and deeply personal reminder of their vows and their connection to the South Devon coast. It honours the “Leave What You Find” principle by not creating a new ‘deposit’ on the beach, but rather utilizing already existing, natural elements as part of their personal story.
  • Our small group (just me, Sarah, Tom,  a special friend each and their photographer) kept our voices low, particularly as dusk settled and nocturnal creatures might become more active.  Our chosen spot was clear of any bird nesting areas, ensuring our presence caused no distress to local wildlife.  Even at twilight, we were mindful that others might be enjoying the beach. Our small, quiet ceremony was unobtrusive, allowing anyone else present to enjoy the peace of the evening. We left no trace that we had ever been there, maintaining the solitude for future visitors.

As I pronounced them united under the vast Devon sky, a sense of profound peace settled over us. Sarah and Tom’s “Coastal Twilight Vows” weren’t just a ceremony; they were an act of love, respect, and deep connection – to each other, and to the breath taking natural world around them. It was a perfect testament to how even the most intimate celebrations can champion environmental responsibility.
